The supplement industry is full of hype and empty promises. Here are the supplements that actually work, ranked by the strength of the evidence — and the ones to skip.
The global sports supplement industry generates $50 billion per year. A vanishingly small fraction of that is spent on products with strong, replicated evidence. Before you spend money on the latest proprietary blend, here's a clear-eyed look at what actually works and what doesn't.
Tier 1: Strong Evidence, Use These
- •Creatine monohydrate: The most studied sports supplement in existence. Hundreds of randomized controlled trials consistently show 5–15% improvements in strength and power output in compound lifts. Also improves recovery, supports brain function, and is safe long-term. Dose: 3–5g daily, no loading required. Timing doesn't matter — consistency does. Take the cheapest monohydrate you can find; there's no evidence that more expensive forms are superior
