  • Visible abs are a body fat issue, not a training issue: Everyone has rectus abdominis (the 'six-pack' muscle). Visibility depends on body fat percentage — typically below 12–15% for men, 18–22% for women
  • You cannot spot-reduce belly fat: Doing 500 crunches won't reduce fat specifically from the midsection. Fat loss is systemic — it occurs everywhere based on overall calorie deficit, not locally based on exercise

  • Hanging leg raise (knees-to-elbows or legs-to-bar): The hanging position eliminates hip flexor dominance better than floor-based exercises. Bringing the knees to the elbows ensures posterior pelvic tilt and maximum rectus abdominis activation — not just hip flexion
  • Cable crunch (kneeling): Allows direct loading of the rectus abdominis with progressive resistance. Far more effective than crunches because it's easily progressive — add weight over time just like any other exercise

Why Crunches Are Overrated

  • The crunch is not wrong — it's just limited: Standard crunches train the rectus abdominis through a short range of motion with no added resistance. They're a low-stimulus, non-progressive exercise
  • The hip flexor dominance problem: Floor-based crunches and sit-ups are often dominated by hip flexors (psoas and rectus femoris) rather than the abdominals — particularly in people with weak cores. This reduces abdominal stimulus while potentially stressing the lower back
  • Non-progressiveness: You can't meaningfully add load to a standard crunch. Once you can do 30, you can do 30 — there's nowhere to go. Progressive exercises (cable crunch, ab wheel, hanging leg raise) allow ongoing stimulus increase
